Overlord 2 Mistresses
One of the advantages of being the Overlord is that you can choose your mistress, whether the scrappy mistress Kelda, or the buxom mistress Juno; the newly corrupted Dark Fay, or the semi-living Ghost Fay. Naturally, the question arises: Who is best girl? Granted, the answer will ultimately be decided by personal preference, but I think that there are some objective standards by which we can. Overlord II, sequel to the critically acclaimed cult hit, sees the return of the chaotic Minions and their new Dark Master. Bigger, badder and more beautifully destructive, Overlord 2 has a Glorious Empire to smash, a massive Netherworld to revive, Minion mounts to mobilize, a trio of mistresses to woo, War Machines to crush opposition.
One of the advantages of being the Overlord is that you can choose your mistress, whether the scrappy mistress Kelda, or the buxom mistress Juno; the newly corrupted Dark Fay, or the semi-living Ghost Fay. Naturally, the question arises: Who is best girl?Granted, the answer will ultimately be decided by personal preference, but I think that there are some objective standards by which we can judge the characters of each mistress to find out which is best.Let's look at Kelda first.
The only Nordbergian to ever show kindness to the Overlord, it seems only natural that she would grow to be his lover one day, but is this redheaded sweetheart any more than just a childhood crush all grown up and looking to score with a powerful potential husband? Kelda displays little character beyond liking hunting and being a mostly nice girl. While she does indeed deserve the title of mistress for her loyalty to the witch boy, making her first mistress is perhaps too great of a position for a back-water serving wench. She does make claims of physical prowess, but we never see her do any real hunting, so it might all be talk. If she could put her skills to the test in a real, ingame combat scenario, she would have a chance to earn her place at the Overlord's side. As it stands, Kelda is fairly bland, and doesn't seem a worthy partner for the Overlord.Next we have Juno, and a brief glance suggests that she is all looks and no brain, but perhaps she has more to offer than meets the eye. In her little trial before the governess of Everlight, she conducts herself with haughtiness in her defense, bluntly spelling out the real reason for her accusers' husbands' infidelity.
This shows a certain amount of courage in the face of false accusation. Sadly, she would not be in that situation in the first place if she were not such a gold digger. This doesn't make her unsuitable to be a mistress, she just shouldn't be first mistress. Adding to this already less than ideal situation, Juno shows nothing that suggests to me that she is not as dumb as she appears or as everyone else thinks. Had she been able to aid the Overlord in some political way to let him take down the empire from within by corrupting key figures, she might have had an opportunity to show some other more devious side of her personality, but as it stands, she ranks below even Kelda in suitability to be the first mistress. Finally we have Fay who's analysis should really be split up considering how different her incarnations are depending on the player's choices. If you chose to corrupt her into Dark Fay, she becomes a pretty simple cartoon villainess. Without any real character developement, she is now evil, because she says she's evil and she talks in an evil sounding deep voice.
Here again we have a mistress who talks a lot but doesn't do much. After she is corrupted, she tells her former subjects to buzz off because she's evil now, but we don't see her actually do anything evil, like blast the pixies who were trying to rescue her from being corrupted, or burn some dryads for no reason at all. That being said, she is still a magical being with ambition and a history of actually doing things besides scrub floors, hunt, sleep around and get tried for witchcraft.
While her character is one dimensional, that one dimension is at least a fitting partner for the Overlord. If the Overlord decides to Overload Fay, she dies and then becomes Ghost Fay! Ghost Fay is.
Probably the worst mistress out of the bunch. She lacks any bitterness over what the Overlord did to her, and without any real motivation for wanting anything to do with the Overlord, wants to be the first mistress. Consider that two motivations for killing Fay would be that the player wants to be as recklessly evil as possible, or perhaps just doesn't want Fay as a mistress.
Why then would the result be that the player is stuck with one of the least evil of all three mistresses in Ghost Fay? She talks about praying for Juno's soul and pitying Kelda's savage ways. She wants to stay to help heal them, even though choosing her was an act of destruction. Yeah, no thanks. So it looks like Dark Fay is the best possible mistress, but if we reach outside the possible player choices, there was actually an even better character who could have been a mistress for the Overlord. No, not the Everlight Governess.
No, not the fat elf priestesses. The girl who could have been the best partner for the Overlord was Queen Fay. Not Ghost Fay, not Dark Fay, just plain old vanilla Fay.Out of all the side characters, Fay has the most character developement, and does more than any other NPC in the game. She enters as an antagonist to the Overlord, and a real threat to his power. She defends her people from the aggressions of both the Empire and the Overlord, and even traps the Overlord in a room with a Troll.
When push came to shove, she did not refuse to ally herself to the Overlord to save both of their people. At the very end, she even made the ultimate sacrifice, becoming Dark Fay (perhaps temporarily) to grant the Overlord the power to defeat the Empire which was the greatest threat to both of their peoples. Having Queen Fay accept the Overlord and become his mistress would have been a perfect ending to her character arc. Yes, Dark Fay does this eventually, but mind control doesn't really count as a character developement, since she essentially becomes a new, worse character.Queen Fay is a good being, which some might argue makes her incompatible with the Evil of the Overlord. Putting aside the fact that Kelda and Juno aren't necessarily evil either, Evil and Good have gotten together romantically in the past.
The Mother Goddess herself was married to the Forgotton God at one time, and were he not killed by the Third Overlord, he may have reconciled with her at some point. Assuming the Fourth Overlord didn't do anything stupid, he could have continued his evil ways with Queen Fay at his side.Perhaps she may have softened his evil heart, or perhaps he would have corrupted her the old fashioned way, maybe by using their common hatred of the Empire.
Regardless, using magic mind control to make Fay evil was an unsatisfying turn in the most interesting character in the entire game.TL;DR. Queen Fay is the best girl in Overlord, so it's a darn shame she was bumped off in favor of Dark Fay or Ghost Fay, neither of whom were as cool or interesting. And where exactly would you stick your D in?Same ^^ Dark Fay has some supernatural power basically (i think), so its all good for an Overlord and she has a good design (evil) also specially when you know she was the goddess of the elves ^^Keldo for the girl who helped him in the past as a friend.Juno meh.:x. It's like how a fitness instructor can help you get fit better than you could if you were trying to get fit on your own, not just because they show you how to do it well, but that they make sure you do it even when you don't want to. Counterpoints: Kelda's evil because she's perfectly fine with your murder and mayhem so long as your victims can put up something remotely resembling a fight. Though it never gets demonstrated, it can be inferred that she's actually something of a blood knight at heart, eager to fight and kill for the thrill of it.
She's also the most violent of the mistresses, being the only one to actually hit someone outside of what happens when the Overlord attacks one of his own mistresses. That being said, I would suggest that she's the least evil, and it's this precise quality that makes her a good mistress for the Overlord, because it was her kindness towards him at a young age that made him fond of her (and the fact that she liked seeing his bullies get their comeuppance). If it wasn't for the lack of character development, in many ways, she would be what you say Queen Fay would be - a perfect complement to the Overlord.Juno is evil because she's self-centered - it's all about her. Everyone who wrongs her must die, and everyone who doesn't please her is worthless trash. Food, jewelry, all the fine things in life are hers for the indulging. If you asked her what her redeeming features were, she'd probably point at her chest with a smirk.
Aside from wanting two specific people dead, what defines her as evil isn't so much the severity of her action, but the lack of any redeeming features. It's not her high sexuality that defines her as evil, it's the way in which she uses it to manipulate men (including the Overlord!) and her hedonistic, egocentric attitude.
If given the chance to usurp the Overlord, she'd decline - not because she doesn't want the power, but she'd rather a man handle the hassle while she reaps all of the pleasures.Dark Fay is in many ways the perfect soul-mate to the Overlord, being just as much of a card-carrying villain as he is. Which is in many ways why your complaints about this hold true - the Overlord himself has barely.any. character, being more a silent menace of darkness with implied personality in one or two situations, than a well-developed character. I honestly don't get the impression that she's mind-controlled - I believe her to be Queen Fay, but drunk on the dark side and addicted to the pleasure dark magic brings. Evil Presence is used to dominate the weak-willed or drain the good out of something, and Queen Fay is definitely not weak-willed.What I'm confused about is the complaint regarding Ghost Fay. Ghost Fay.is. Queen Fay, freed from the mortal coil (and whatever evil effects that Evil Presence had on her).
The Overlord does kill her, sure, but she's not mad at him because she wanted to be punished for the sins she committed in the name of the greater good. She's a martyr who actually gets to stick around and enjoy the fact.
She had already come to accept him as a partner - now she gets to accept him as a lover. Originally posted by:Counterpoints: snipDecent points here.
Perhaps my complaints with the possible mistresses stem from my conviction that actions speak louder than words, and we have more words than actions from the mistresses. You mention Kelda's complicity with the evil that the Overlord does. This is a far cry from the kind of evil that the Overlord has set as a standard. One might just as well argue that Kelda is picking the winning side as an act of self preservation.Deciding to be a mistress of the Overlord is a very tame act of evil that all possible mistress choices have in common, albeit to varying degrees of culpability when taking into consideration their other options. Juno in particular didn't appear to have many other options since she was on death row and saved by the Overlord. Kelda was enslaved by the Empire. Considering that they are the primary antagonist in the game, can you really call it evil to side against them in a war?
Only Dark Fay chooses the Overlord (though her so-called, choice may be doubted in legitimicy because magic) despite having an equally good option not to. She's still the Queen of the Elves, and throwing off that mantel was probably the least evil thing she could have done considering the potential evil that could have been accomplished had she kept the title and corrupted them all from within(Razhagal from Starcraft Broodwar, anyone?).I maintain that Queen Fay, Dark Fay, and Ghost Fay are all distinct characters. Whether QF and GF were intended to be the same by the writers is irrelevant considering how different they act and how they are portrayed. Queen Fay fights to defend her people. Ghost Fay does no such thing, even when you quash the Everlight forest rebellion.
I don't see how anyone could think even without context that someone is the same person after they are dead. Only in comedies does a ghost maintain the same personallity as his living counterpart. As far back as the Odyssey of Homer, Achilles mourns his decision to die gloriously in combat when he could have lived anonymously for many years.Put it this way: After offering him an alliance, if the Overlord tried to kill Queen Fay and failed, would she have been mad? I think so, because she strikes me as a fighter who only worked with the Overlord because she was backed into a corner. The fact that Ghost Fay isn't mad tells me that she's not the same person anymore. When you say that she wanted to be punished, I don't remember the exact quote, but I don't think we are meant to think that she is suicidally guilty of her shortcomings as queen, but merely that she will sacrifice her life if necessary to save her people. It was NOT necessary for her to die to save her people.
Her death was a deliberate and evil decision by a destructive Overlord, and that her ghost is okay with this does NOT mesh with the character of the original Queen Fay. If someone doesn't react to the player's decisions, then that character breaks immersion. Characters have a job to do, act like real people, and Ghost Fay fails at this to a significantly greater degree than the others.I think we agree on Dark Fay. I started a discussion awhile back about whether Overlords should talk to add to their character, and I think if a good writer got on board with it, a talking Overlord could fix a lot of these problems.
It's mostly moot since Overlord is likely a dead franchise, but we can dream. Originally posted by:Wa-a-at? I did, like, research and scientific experiments and stuff. It's a bit sad she is not able to use her seductive/manipulative skills for you, if that's true, something the developers missed in the game design. She's pretty similar to Velvet (being a seductive gold-digger), with the only difference Velvet probably really had some kind of magical powers as the daughter of a wizard.
(And the dark style goes to Dark Fay rather than Juno). But the being a gold-digger (and whench?) and not really devotive to the Overlord (I guess she isn't), are the two big reasons she's not a good choice. (Though I'd like to know where she got those spiders)'Finally we have Fay.' -I might as well think, Queen Fay would be one of the best choices as the first Mistress, because it would give you power over the Fairies?' -Actually, turning her into a Ghost makes her obsessive in love with you, as far as I know from what I've read. Ghost Fay is a totally twisted/disturbed character.I don't know if she still possesses some magical power, though I guess as a Ghost, she's still some kind of magical being.I wonder if it would be possible for the Overlord to father a offspring with her, if so, the fifth Overlord may be the strongest of all due the ghostly-fairy heritage. If not, she's probably would really be the worst choice as first mistress like that.To sum it up:Looking after personallity, Kelda and Dark Fay fight for the 1. Place. When it comes to their traits, the untouched Queen Fay would probably score the 1. Place, closly followed by Kelda and Dark Fay.
There are nine quests that will determine your overlord's alignment. Use the Evil Presence spell to dominate enemies (note: one catalyst speeds it up just enough - overdo the spell and you'll kill faster than you realize) and overload the spell only when called for on the quest list below. To destroy things, simply use minions, your weapons, or overcharge the Evil Presence spell (which is really a waste of mana). 100% Domination vs. 100% DestructionBorius' FateUse the Evil Presence spell to enslave Borius or use a weapon to kill him.
No matter which method you use, the roof will break up and give you the life force needed to take over the town.NordbergEnslaving everyone will take some time because you will need blue and green minions to access the whole town. Killing everyone requires the same amount of work. Slavery will let you collect more treasure and goods when you visit the town on subsequent trips (more tribute).Nordhaven PortEnthrall ten villagers to free the ship from the ice, or simply ignite the final tar pit (in the back of the village) with red minions and destroy the whole place.Nordberg CommuneEnslave 2/3's of the elves here instead of outright destruction will let you dominate the area. Otherwise, you will have to kill everyone and the fat Elf who's their boss. Leave your minions near the commune entrance, or the minions will auto-kill the inhabitants for you.The GovernessUse the Evil Presence spell to enslave the Governess of Everlight or use a weapon to kill her. You will still need to destroy the temple afterwards for the life force.EverlightYou can dominate approximately 70 to 80 villagers before you need to deal with the rebelling elves. If you are destroying the town, then go through and kill them all.
Otherwise, you should be very careful deploying minions and keep a back-up save handy. If you accidentally kill a rebel, he or she counts against the town's population and you will mess up the quest. For the final few elves at the treehouse your Overlord cannot get to, have spiders stand guard on the wall to lure away the bombs. When an elf is at the edge of the tree house, your Evil Presence spell should just be able to target the villager from the walkway (just barely).Senator DreariusThis quest cannot be completed until the blue hive is unlocked.
The senator's villa will reset to its original state (so you can enter the sewer) until after the arena event. Simply dominate or slay Drearius and his wife (do the same thing) to settle this quest. The YetiUse the Netherworld Gate in the arena to fully charge your mana bar (you'll need it). Shrink the yeti to normal size and let go once you see the purple domination fuzz to enslave it. Otherwise, keep up the music and fry the guy into nothingness and be very, very evil.Queen FayFay will automatically register as domination quest if you let her stroll back to the warp pad once she becomes Dark Fay. To get Ghost Fay (who incidentally looks less evil) simply fry her squishy elf brains with targeted Evil Presence (she dies pretty fast) before she can warp away.
